國畫 |Chinese Ink-painting

My grandfather was a great artist. I learned traditional Chinese ink painting techniques since I was 7 years old

Chinese painting (國畫) is one of the oldest continuous artistic traditions in the world. It involves essentially the same techniques as calligraphy and is done with a brush dipped in black ink or coloured pigments; oils are not used.

My graphic style

My graphic style is deeply influenced by my grandfather. In my graphic design, I found it is fascinating to combine the traditional techniques that I learned from him and modern graphics.

Enschede Chinese New Year Project

In 2018 (year of dog), I was invited by the Enschede government to design a series of graphics for the Chinese New Year Gala that was host in the Twente University. The purpose of this event to introduce the Chinese culture and new year activities to the Dutch society.

In this series of graphics, I used two most presentative colours (oranje en delfts blauw) coupled with traditional style to show the new year activities.

Lion dance (simplified Chinese: 舞狮) is a form of traditional dance in Chinese culture and other Asian countries in which performers mimic a lion's movements in a lion costume to bring good luck and fortune. The lion dance is usually performed during the Chinese New Year and other Chinese traditional, cultural and religious festivals.

Tanghulu (simplified Chinese: 糖葫芦) also called bingtanghulu, is a traditional Northern Chinese snack of candied. It consists of fruits covered in hard candy on bamboo skewers which are approximately 20 cm long. .

Fireworks are used to drive away the evil in China. Right after 12:00PM on New Year'sEve, fireworks will be launched to celebrate the coming of the New Year as well as to drive away the evil. It is believed that the person who launched the first firework of the New Year will obtain good luck.

A reunion dinner (Chinese: 年夜飯) is held on New Year's Eve of the Chinese and Vietnamese New Years, during which family members get together to celebrate. It is often considered the most important get-together meal of the entire year.
